HISTORY
Timeless Legacy
Nestled in the heart of the Queen of the Hills, Kluney Manor is a Victorian suite hotel that feels less like a getaway and more like a home. Surrounded by a quiet, secure neighborhood, the manor offers sweeping views of both the Eastern and Western Ghats — a serene escape from the everyday.
The story of Kluney Manor began in 1828, when Captain Macpherson of the British Army built this stately residence. Years later, it became the cherished summer retreat of the Maharaja of Patna. Today, for the first time, this charming colonial villa opens its doors to guests, inviting them to relive a piece of Ooty’s timeless past. Legend has it that in 1852 — a fine year for wine — Captain Macpherson poured himself a glass and declared, “Let’s have a nice home here in Ooty.” With his band of pioneers, he set out to carve the very first road from the plains to the Queen of Hill Stations. It was a monumental task — every curve measured, every boulder conquered — until at last, the road was complete.
Impressed by his work, Her Majesty rewarded the Captain and his men with vast lands. While most returned to England, Macpherson stayed behind, captivated by Ooty’s misty charm. Brick by brick, he built Kluney Manor — a home filled with history, warmth, and quiet grandeur. And when the work was done, he raised his glass once more, to the home that still stands proud today.
